SHANGHAI, China (AP) - Authorities in China's commercial capital have ordered a woman who became irate after she was given a ticket for jaywalking to spend 10 days in jail, police said Tuesday.

The woman was identified only by the surname Liu, although the scene of her confrontation with the traffic policeman who stopped her as she crossed a busy downtown street against the lights was shown on the local television news.

An official at the local police headquarters nearby confirmed local newspaper reports about the arrest. He refused to give his name, as is common with Chinese police and other government officials.

Jaywalking is practically a national pastime in China, where motorists face foot, bicycle and even automobile traffic coming from practically every direction. Shanghai police recently resumed their periodic attempts to crack down on the problem, with television crews on hand to film the campaign.

The state-run Shanghai Daily said that Liu, from northeastern China, scolded the policeman who tried to stop her from crossing Huaihai Road, one of the city's busiest downtown streets; refused to pay a fine and scratched him on the hand.

She eventually was seized by three female traffic police assistants and taken into custody. The television cameras followed her into the police station, where she apologized for her behavior.

Liu earned her stay in jail not for jaywalking but for being uncooperative, the police official said, noting that she might have gotten away with only a 10 yuan to 20 yuan ($1.20-$2.40) fine.
